He played a crucial role in the company becoming the largest energy infrastructure firm in North America after its $37 billion merger with Spectra Energy. Under his leadership, Enbridge focused on safety, operational reliability, and aligned executive pay with performance—tasks which earned him a total compensation of nearly $9 million in 2018. Monaco successfully led the sale of non-core assets worth $7.8 billion and directed investments in growth projects valued at $13 billion. He emphasized a cleaner business model while also overseeing the integration of Spectra Energy, achieving synergies and streamlining operations. Al announced his retirement effective January 2023, leaving behind a legacy marked by an unwavering focus on sustainable growth and strategic transformation in the energy sector.
